EBay’s prospective deal to buy Skype seems to be confusing people. The fit between an IP-telco and a trading platform seems opaque at first glance.

The secret to me is in the Brands. Fuse a trusted trading acceptance marque and a multi-media community interaction technology, and you’ve got a VISA-style mutual trust-marque which can broker relationships, personal information, knowledge, and even social trust itself.

Aside from the simple cross-marketing opportunity, the ability for EBay to add more community interaction functionality heralds some really intriguing possibilities.

I think I agree with John Pulver that this is indeed a radical deal, but for me it goes well beyond technology fit.

I’d go much further. Think about the implications for identity management. If Skype can keep track of social networks and link those to community-wide transaction-trails, it will sit on the CRM solution to end all CRM solutions. Just decode the transaction patterns.

If it can make that functionality available to users – as I’m sure it will, then it can play a significant role the emerging market for social identity management. No need for a SIM card though.

Just ask the community who I am…
