Building further on recent exchanges around unintended consequences and the failure of collective imagination with Julian ..an interesting piece in the Times today.

Lynne Truss, (Eats Shoots and Leaves) is interviewed on her new book, by Lewis Smith:

” Consideration is built upon imagination” she argued.

“That’s the fundamental problem. People are not even attempting to imagine their impact upon other people.”

I am going to guzzle a big slice of humble pie at this point – then sum up my courage to say…
EXACTLY!

The poverty of individual imagination, and the absence of collective dialogue, is what results is collective inertia. We yearn to be self-directed. But we refuse to lead others. We have followership, without leaders.

IMVHO, we are witnessing the death of empathy. The relentless pressure to consume and self-define leaves no time for construction and support of others.

And I confess, day by day, I am in the vanguard of this self obsession. Blogging does not help!

Our values are being disrupted. The global is replacing the local. The conceptual is replacing the real. Global compassion fatigue is but a prelude to a collective nervous breakdown.

How do we escape this downward spiral into rational, conservative individualism?

Buggered if I know…

We need better dialogue. Something beyond democracy…
